Modo Cooperative (a.k.a. The Car Co-op)
Why Did You Start Your Business?
Our mission is to reduce local environmental impact and dependency on privately owned vehicles – by getting more people to share fewer cars. Our members are able to get rid of their cars (or second cars); while getting easy and affordable access to sports cars, hybrids, EVs, trucks and more. Fewer cars means less congestion, safer streets, cleaner air, more green space, and healthier, more connected communities.
What’s The Most Important Business Lesson You’ve Learned?
Fail fast. As a Cooperative, we need to be very strategic about how we use our lean resources. We have a great culture of innovating – otherwise called experimenting (!) – and if something doesn’t work, we learn from it and move on.
What Local Suppliers (goods or services) Can't You Live Without? Why?
Oh my gosh, there’s so many! Lets’ start with Hemlock Printers, Fairware, Sandbox, Novex, Potluck Cafe, Salt Spring Coffee and Saul Good Gift Co. Service with a smile, great quality, and no-compromise pricing.
One Thing That Never Ceases to Amaze You About Doing Business Here Is….
The breadth and depth of amazing local businesses, shops and services.
How Are Your Products/Services Environmentally And Socially Beneficial?
Every Modo takes between 9 to 13 cars off our roads – reducing congestions and pollution. Communities with carsharing are also safer and healthier.
How Do You Support Other Local Businesses?
We always start with local businesses at the top of our shopping list. Whether it’s finding a printer, caterer or sign-maker, we always get great products and services at great prices – with a “wow” experience. We also support social enterprises, like Keeners Carwash, who employs at-risk-youth to wash our fleet and others.
