Why Did You Start Your Business?

I think Vancouver has really needed a hub for this kind of thing. When I was first learning to do things like make cheese, roast coffee, or keep bees it was really tough to find supplies or talk to someone who had done it before on a home scale. This is basically the store I always wanted to shop at.

Best Kept Secret or Little Known Fact About Your Neighbouhood?

There is lots going on North of Hastings! I’m not sure if this is a secret, but I had never really ventured up toward Powell St before setting up shop in this area.

What Inspires You to Keep Moving Forward?

Every once in a while someone finds something here that they’ve been looking for for ages, and that feels pretty good. I also love it when people walk in with the idea that something they want to learn about is going to be super intimidating, and walk out feeling like they can bang it out in an afternoon. This happens all the time with fermenting sauerkraut – yes, it turns out it’s super easy! We’re a retail shop but really we’re in the business of empowerment.

The products we sell aren’t just stuff, they’re tools or supplies that enable folks to acquire new skills and DO things. There are so many benefits to this kind of participation – it’s great for health, community, the environment, and self-confidence.

Why Is Local Important To You?

Many reasons! I love dealing with people I can meet in person. It’s just easier. And it saves fossil fuels in transportation. And I can trust where stuff comes from, and keep resources within the local economy.
