What’s Your Business?
Backyard Creative is a small graphic design shop operating on the inherent belief that high-quality design can affect positive change in our communities.
Lisa Hemingway, Owner and Creative Consultant, believes that “good” design not only communicates efficiently and embodies the craft of design, but also considers its environmental, social and economic impacts.
What’s The Most Important Business Lesson You’ve Learned?
Stay true to your values as they are the basis for all that you do. Also, listen to that gut instinct! You’re not doing anyone a favour by ignoring it.
Too Many Trips, Calls, Meetings, Emails, Tweets… What’s Your Escape?
I love hiking – a certain level of calm comes over me when I’m out in nature. Let’s me think clearly away from distraction and frees up my spirit to connect with world around me. I am constantly inspired by the thought that we’re all just one little part of a huge, and totally amazing natural system.
What Sustainability Practice/Achievement Are You Most Proud Of?
I have made volunteering in my community a regular part of my work/life balance as a way to give back (and not just doing ‘free’ design work for people!). I’m a coach for the Special Olympics, and do ongoing work with One Earth Initiative. I am also the Sustainability chair for the BC Chapter of the Society of Graphic Designer of Canada. I help educate and inspire our members to integrate sustainable values into their work and volunteer my time to connect with my local community of graphic design professionals to improve the overall value of design.
You Are Excited About The Future Because…
It’s a very exciting time to be a designer – there are so many new developments in creating a more sustainable future that I am inspired to contribute to this movement by helping people understand, get excited and jump on board.
